Mangold, Rubarb Chard, röd

Black with red leaf stalks. The leaves are used in the same way as spinach and the stems as asparagus. Thinning harvest gradually, then leaf by leaf (the outermost ones), or cut off the whole plant 2-3cm above the ground. New leaves grow up and can be harvested throughout the fall. Often grown as a 1-year-old, but is a 2-year-old plant. Overwinters in large parts of the country, covered with dry leaves. Can then provide an early crop before the plant flowers in year 2. Thrives best in loamy, nutritious and well-drained soil.
