Get your patio in order before summer
When bright spring and summer evenings lure us outside after a day of work and school, it's time to make your patio summer-ready. Make room to enjoy good food, the scents of summer, socialize with family and friends, and grow your own food.

To get the most out of the lovely warm months, it's a good idea to think about your patio being able to meet multiple needs. When planning your patio, it's a good idea to think about it in the same way you think about your home itself. Feel free to divide your patio into different zones. The bigger the space, the more possibilities, but that doesn't mean you can't do a lot even in smaller areas. Here are some tips for both large and small outdoor spaces.
Decorate your patio with different rooms
The large outdoor space
A large outdoor area can be divided into different areas that make it more stylish and functional.
- A lovely place to sit, either on a comfortable sofa or in a dining group.
- An outdoor kitchen together with an herb garden for your favorite herbs makes cooking more fun.
- A separate space for rest and reflection will probably be well used if it gets a comfortable lounger or hammock.
- A playground for the children with strawberries and wild strawberries in pots.
The small patio
If the outdoor space is more limited in size, prioritization is required. What are the needs and desires of the family?
- Perhaps a combination of a sofa group and a dining area is a good alternative?
- The possibility of growing in a small area is possible if you use half or quarter-sized pots, wall brackets for growing that can be hung on railings, or wall and planting boxes adapted to smaller areas.
Plants in pots on the patio
Feel free to put pots of different sizes and expressions together in groups to get exciting combinations. By putting together several similar plants or flowers in the same color tone, you get a tighter and calmer feeling. With a larger mix of varieties and colors, it becomes more lively.
Summer flowers such as geraniums, daisies, lobelia and tagetes are classics, while sedges, clover and meadow flowers have become very popular in recent years. Perennials in pots are also popular, such as lavender, sage, lily of the valley and bergenia.
Growing herbs and vegetables in pots
To make it easy to use herbs and vegetables in your cooking, it is a good idea to grow them close to the kitchen. If your vegetable garden is further away in the garden or you don't have a garden, large pots are a great way to be flexible with your cultivation. Strawberries, wild strawberries and vegetables are also great to grow on the terrace. Then young and old can enjoy the harvest directly from the plant.
Watering the plants on the patio
An important detail for successful plant growth is watering. This is especially important when growing in pots. How often and how much depends not only on the type of plant, but also on the size of the pot, whether it gets a lot of sun or shade, and how hot it is. In general, it is easier to care for plants if they are in large pots with holes in the bottom, so that the plant has access to extra nutrients and water.
