Cut off flowers that start to fade, then even more new buds will appear.
What can I plant in?
You can actually plant in anything. The most important thing is that what you plant in is big enough for the plant. If the pots are too small, there will be little space for water and nutrients, and you will have to water and fertilize much more often when the plants have grown a little. To regulate the humidity, it is a good idea to use pots with one or more drainage holes in the bottom, so that excess water can drain out.
We most often plant in pots, urns and balcony boxes. But use your imagination: Maybe you have a nice, old wheelbarrow, a rusty bucket or jug, some baskets, wooden boxes or something else nice. Feel free to mix different sizes and shapes. Not everything needs to be on the floor or the ground. Build height with hanging baskets from the ceiling, wall hangings and pedestals. However, remember that the pots are exposed to frost and ice if they are left outside in winter, so in that case choose pots made of frost-resistant materials. This is especially important if the plants are outdoors: If it rains a lot in the fall and then the temperatures drop below freezing, you risk the pots cracking due to frostbite.
What plants can I put in the same pot?
- Plants that thrive in sun or shade
There are really no rules for which plants can be planted together, but make sure that the ones you put in the same pot or balcony box thrive in the same environment, whether there is a lot of sun or not in the place.
- Colors and varieties
When you put the plants together, you can, for example, stick to one color shade, i.e. tone-on-tone in white, blue pink or red, but mix plants with different shapes and growth habits. Many times it can be nice to have only one variety in a pot, or perhaps one flowering and one green plant, so that both the pot and the plants come to their full potential.
- Height and volume
In large pots, it is nice to have tall plants, such as grass or coniferous plants. If the pot is to be visible from several angles, the tallest plant should be in the middle. If the arrangement is to be against a wall or similar, place the tallest plant in the back. Otherwise, it might be a good idea to consider that the plants should be placed with a certain symmetry and look good from multiple angles.
Consider the following when planting in pots
- Strong colors look good in sunlight.
- Pinch off the flowers as soon as they start to look ugly, then you will get a more abundant bloom.
- Plant a plant that spreads easily, together with other plants. It creates nice contrasts together with, for example, a climbing plant, grass, ivy or another green plant.
