Flowers in hanging baskets – how to succeed

Outdoor plants and garden
Summer

Freshen up your balcony, outdoor space or garden with hanging flowers in hanging baskets. Summer flowers in hanging baskets offer endless possibilities!

Hanging baskets on the balcony or outdoor space add splashes of color along the facade, and you also save space on the floor and table. Use flowers and plants individually or create beautiful groupings.

Planting together in hanging baskets

If you want to add a personal touch to your hanging baskets, you can plant different flowers together and create your own composition.

  • Similar color tones
Use flowers in the same color scale, but in different shades that go tone by tone. Petunias in different colors are wonderful flowers for hanging baskets. Feel free to use some hanging green plants to lighten the impression, such as silver rain or ivy, or leave the basket as it is – in color.
  • Green hanging baskets
Green is always great, and a hanging basket with only green plants can be a great eye-catcher. Many green plants can also tolerate shade or partial shade, such as ferns or ivy.
  • Colors throughout the summer
Collect different colors in the hanging basket throughout the summer. Use complementary colors such as yellow and purple, or orange and cerise to create a fantastic combination. Examples of suitable flowers are geranium, pansy, lobelia, cinquefoil, bougainvillea, dipladenia pyramide, fuchsia and petunia.

Tip! Remember to use plants that do not grow too tall. It looks nicer if the plants hang down and form a small "waterfall" of summer flowers.

How to care for hanging baskets and hanging flowers

Hanging flower baskets need plenty of care to prevent them from drying out or wilting. There are different ways to care for your baskets, depending on whether you are at home or going on holiday.

  • Cut the basket down before you go on holiday. This promotes flowering and reduces the need for water.
  • Remove wilted flowers and leaves regularly, as these take energy from the fresh flowers.
  • Think about the nutrient requirements. A basket needs plenty of flower nutrition to stay beautiful.
  • Remember to water often. If the basket is hanging in the sun, it will require extra water to prevent it from drying out.
  • Dried out or limp baskets can be placed on a tray of water so that the roots can absorb plenty of liquid.

The right amount of soil in the pot

Hanging baskets need plenty of soil to thrive and grow lushly. The larger the basket, the more soil – it's that simple! With us you will find both beautiful hanging baskets and good soil so that your hanging baskets stay fresh longer.

Also make sure to adapt the planting to the right pot size so that the flowers have plenty of room to grow. You can of course also make your own hanging baskets with wicker baskets or self-painted pots to add a personal touch to your outdoor space.

Sow your summer flowers from seeds directly in the garden bed

Sow your summer flowers from seeds directly in the garden bed

Direct sowing means skipping the step of starting seeds indoors and sowing directly in the outdoor bed. You get a beautiful bed faster, save indoor growing space, and avoid some of the transplanting and acclimatization of young plants in the spring. You can also sow in the fall for an earlier bloom in the spring. The seeds remain dormant, waiting for the right temperature to begin growing.

If you are going to plant a new hedge, choose shrubs that flower. They are not only beautiful, but also useful as both food and protection for insects and small animals.
